Eric heads Withers' International Corporate Tax practice in Asia. He also heads the Japan tax practice, which was selected by International Tax Review as the 'Japan National Tax Firm of the Year' for 2016.
Eric is recognised as a leading tax lawyer for international M & A, cross-border corporate transactions, Asia focused investment funds, and real estate, distressed asset, and private equity investments in Asia. Based in Asia for over 20 years, Eric specialises in structuring Asia-Pacific investments and is an expert at using global tax treaties and tax regimes to achieve optimal tax efficiency for global businesses, funds, and institutional and private investors. He has advised clients in over $50 billion of international corporate and private equity transactions, real estate, and troubled debt investments.
He is ranked in Chambers' Asia Pacific guide as a Band 1 leading lawyer for Japanese tax matters and is described as 'extremely impressive'. He is also recognised as a leading tax lawyer in Legal 500's Asia Pacific Guide and was named by Best Lawyers as the Tokyo Tax Law 'Lawyer of the Year' in 2015. In 2018, he was nominated by Asia Legal Business as the Foreign Lawyer of the Year in Japan.
He is based in the Tokyo, Singapore and Hong Kong offices of Withers, and is an expert on structuring global investment funds using a Singapore treaty platform for investment throughout the Asia-Pacific region.
Prior to joining Withers, Eric was the Head of Tax – Asia for White & Case and the Asia Tax Leader for Morrison & Foerster.
In addition to being a lawyer, Eric is also licensed as a certified public accountant (not in public practice), and a certified tax advisor in Singapore.
Eric graduated summa cum laude from the University of Illinois, College of Law, where he ranked first in his class.
