Alfonso López-Ibor is the Senior Partner of the Madrid office of Ventura Garcés & López-Ibor Abogados, founded by himself together with the late Ventura Garcés, a leading commercial lawyer based in Barcelona. Before joining the firm and for ten years, he was the Managing Partner of the Madrid office of Allen & Overy.
His practice covers virtually all aspects of corporate law, finance and banking. He is also widely known for his expertise in litigation and for his extensive experience in the air transport industry. In his corporate practice, he regularly advises clients on the acquisition and sale of Spanish and foreign companies, on private equity transactions, management buy-outs and transfers of business divisions and assets or branches.
In his banking and finance practices, he has developed extensive experience on national and multi-jurisdictional issues, syndicated loan operations, guarantees and asset finance and on the Spanish Stock Exchange regulations, including on reporting obligations to the public at large and to the Spanish stock market regulatory agency (CNMV).
He is widely recognized for his expertise on the air industry, where he is one of Spain's foremost experts including domestic and international agreements, handling agreements, all aspect of related financing such as financing structures, leasing agreements, guarantees, acquisition finance; and regulatory matters, including licenses and the procedures involved in dealing with the Spanish Government agencies responsible for air transport. He regularly acts for major aircraft lessor and banks involved in aircraft financing. He also acts for low cost airlines operating in and out of Spain in connection with regulatory issues, passenger and insurance claims and advice on airport legislation. His litigation practice involves primarily international litigation and arbitration, with a particular focus on complex, high-stake disputes. Alfonso López-Ibor graduated from the Faculty of Law of the Complutense University of Madrid, attended the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and the Academy of International Law of The Hague. He is also a former member of the Spanish Foreign Service, where he reached the category of deputy ambassador. He has taught private international law at the ICADE School of Law and International Business Law at the IE University, both in Madrid. He has been a member of the Bar of Madrid since 1980. He speaks Spanish, English, French and some German.
