Lawrence Theall is the managing partner of Theall Group LLP.
Larry has acted as coverage counsel to the Attorney General for Ontario since 2003 and has acted as lead counsel in over 75 trials and arbitral hearings, all of which went to a final decision or verdict. He has appeared before all levels of the Ontario and Federal courts, as well as the superior courts of Manitoba and Alberta.
When founding the firm, a conscious decision was made to act only for policy holders, and not for insurers, with respect to coverage disputes. This avoids the inherent conflicts that arise when a law firm acts for both. Our focus is on understanding and effectively representing the interests of policy holders and their brokers. We will act on inter-insurer disputes, where policy holders are not involved in an adversarial manner.
In addition to our coverage litigation practice, Larry has assisted clients on a broad range of complex insurance issues. This has included working on underwriting submissions, policy drafting, coverage analysis, risk management reviews, alternative risk transfer, coordinating insurance and contractual allocations of risk, captive insurance programs, reinsurance coverage and claims submissions. As well, we have participated in a number of inter-disciplinary projects involving both risk analysis and alternative risk management structures.
Larry obtained his law degree at the University of Toronto (1985) where he was awarded the Laskin Prize for highest standing in Constitutional Law.
Larry is an editor for the Insurance chapter to be published in Bullen & Leake & Jacob's 3rd Edition of Canadian Precedents of Pleadings in 2017.
He is a co-author of the annually updated loose-leaf text, Product Liability: Canadian Law and Practice (Canada Law Book) with an extensive Insurance chapter. For Larry's full bio, see http://www.theallgroup.com/The-Lawyers/Lawrence-G-Theall.aspx
The firm has distinguished itself under Larry's leadership as a small firm that delivers "big firm" results, in a practical and cost effective manner. This is done by combining academic excellence with strategic file management, superior negotiating skills and leveraging our use of technology. All of our lawyers are expected to be proficient with litigation support software, including our e-discovery platforms, Eclipse and Case Map.
We believe the quality of our services is best illustrated through the eyes of our clients and peers. This is why the majority of our new business comes from referrals by our peers at national and multi-national firms, a variety of major insurance brokers and in-house counsel of firms we have represented.
