Darrell R Johnson has lived in Indonesia for more than 35 years. His expertise includes insurance law, Indonesian finance, banking and capital markets law, foreign investment, oil and gas law, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate and commercial law.
A 1966 honours graduate in political science from the University of Southern California and Cambridge University, Darrell earned a JD from Stanford Law School in 1969. While at Stanford, he was on the board of editors of the Stanford Law Review and chairman of the International Law Society. He is a member of the State Bar of California and has been admitted to practise before the US Supreme Court and the Federal District Court (Central District) of California.

Darrell advises multinational companies and large Indonesian firms across a range of practice areas. His clients in the insurance sector have included Dai-ichi Life Insurance, AIG Chartis, AIA, Allianz, Prudential, Aetna, ACE and MetLife.
Darrell is a member of the American Bar Association (Sections of International Law and Practice; Business Law; Administrative Law; Real Estate Property Law), the Inter-Pacific Bar Association (Sections of Banking Law and Business Organizations), and the International Bar Association (Committees on Banking Law; Business Organizations; Issues and Trading in Securities; Multinationals and Foreign Investment Policy; International Franchising). He is a member of the Board of Advisers of the International and Comparative Law Centre of the Southwestern Legal Foundation and on the Board of Governors of the American Chamber of Commerce in Indonesia. He is on the Panel of Arbitrators at the Singapore International Arbitration Centre.
In 1997, Darrell was selected as a Fellow of the American Bar Association and is a founding member of the International Insolvency Institute. He was the founding member of the Board of Advisers for and the principal coordinator of the ELIPS Project, Indonesia's commercial law reform project from 1992–1996, the largest single country effort of its kind in the world.
