Tal Band is a managing partner at S Horowitz & Co, where he heads the largest intellectual property group of any large Israeli commercial law firm.
Tal's IP practice focuses on patents, trademarks, trade secrets, knowhow and copyright litigation primarily for the pharmaceuticals, life sciences, telecommunications and consumer products' sectors. Tal also provides ongoing legal advice on regulatory matters, commercial transactions and other issues of specific interest to the life sciences industry. He has particular expertise in complex, multi-jurisdictional disputes and works in close coordination with leading IP litigators in the US, the UK and other jurisdictions.
Ranked by Chambers Global as a leader in the IP field, Tal is also listed as a top IP litigator by European Legal 500, European Legal Experts, Who's Who in IP, Managing Intellectual Property, IFLR 1000 and the World's Leading Patent Experts. In 2010 and 2014 Tal was awarded the Client Choice Award by the International Law Office Magazine. His group was also the recipient of the MIP award for Firm of the Year 2010.
Tal has represented international corporations with global markets, domestic companies with global operations, innovative start-ups and well-known R&D institutions before the entire range of Israeli civil courts, the Patents and Trade Marks Office, arbitrators and various legislative bodies in precedent-setting cases that have significantly influenced Israel's patent and trade mark laws.
By invitation, Tal is a regular speaker at Israel's major university and college law faculties where he lectures on IP issues and often speaks on diverse IPrelated topics at various international professional conferences and seminars. Tal is leading the cooperation of the firm with the law faculty of the Tel Aviv University, which established the S. Horowitz Institute for Intellectual Property.
Having served as a member of governmental committees established to review and propose amendments to the Israeli patent and trade mark laws in Israel, Tal is extensively involved in the drafting of Israeli patent legislation, particularly in the area of pharmaceuticals, including the legislation that implemented the TRIPs Agreement into Israeli law.
Tal is active in various international IP organisations. Between 2004 and 2016, Tal served as President of the Israel Chapter of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property Rights (AIPPI). Tal also served as chairperson of AIPPI's International Membership Committee between 2010 and 2014. In 2013, he chaired the first international AIPPI conference in Israel. Following its success, Tal led the organizing committee of the conference and co-chaired the second international AIPPI conference in Israel in 2016.
Tal is the chair of the IP Committee of IATI, Israel's umbrella organisation of the high-tech and life-science industries.
Since 2013, Tal has been serving as Vice President of the IP Group of Lex Mundi, an international organisation of leading law firms in more than 150 countries. He is also a member of AIPLA, the International Trade Mark Association, ECTA and ALAI.
