John D Shugrue is a partner in the Insurance Recovery Group and affiliate member of the Energy & Natural Resources Group in Reed Smith's Chicago office. He represents policyholders in complex insurance coverage matters involving the full array of coverages, including: General and Excess Liability, D&O, OEE/Energy Package, Product Recall, First Party Property/Business Interruption, Errors & Omissions, Credit Risk, Cargo/Inland Transit, Fiduciary Liability, Fidelity/Commercial Crime and Pollution Liability coverage. He has deep experience with all major US insurers, Lloyd's underwriters and other London, European and Bermuda market insurers. John has litigated coverage disputes in over 20 states and also handled US and international arbitrations. He has represented major policyholders including Anadarko Petroleum, Castleton Commodities, United Parcel Services, International Game Technology, Tribune Company, PBF Energy, Kraft Foods, BHP Billiton, Foot Locker and Republic Services involving claims throughout the US and in Canada, the UK, Italy, China, Brazil, Nicaragua, Japan and West Africa. He frequently is engaged on high-value insurance claims where tens or hundreds of millions of dollars are at stake.
John received his undergraduate degree with honors from the University of Denver. He graduated with honors from the University of North Carolina School of Law and began his legal career at Jenner & Block, focusing on insurance coverage matters for policyholders. He was one of the principal attorneys involved in developing Jenner's insurance recovery practice on behalf of policyholders, and became a partner at Jenner in 1995. In 2000, he joined Zevnik Horton, a national policyholder firm, as a partner in its Chicago office and chair of its insurance recovery practice. In 2003, he opened and became the Managing Partner of Morgan Lewis' Chicago office and later was made co-chair of Morgan's Insurance Recovery Group. He joined Reed Smith in 2008.
John co-authored the treatise Insurance Coverage Disputes, published by Law Journal Press. He writes and lectures often on insurance coverage topics, including business interruption claims, D&O liability insurance issues, environmental insurance coverage, coverage for energy and commodities companies and special issues relating to defense coverage.
John is a former co-chair of the American Bar Association Litigation Section's Insurance Coverage Litigation Committee, twice co-chaired the Committee's annual meeting, and co-chaired a bi-partisan American Bar Association task force that prepared the Manual for Complex Insurance Coverage Litigation. He also served as a member of the Federal Practice Task Force of the ABA's Section of Litigation.
He regularly has been rated as one of the leading policyholder insurance coverage attorneys in the US by Chambers USA, Legal 500 and Best Lawyers in America, and internationally by Who's Who Legal.
