Nigel Kat is Senior Counsel in Hong Kong and an experienced arbitrator. Called to the Bar in London and Hong Kong and admitted to the Bar in New York, his practice as an international arbitrator builds upon years of practice as counsel in international disputes in arbitration and the Courts.
A member of the AAA/ICDR, APRAG, HKIAC and CI Arb panels, Nigel has sat as sole and co-arbitrator in disputes concerning international trade and finance, construction, mining [including in the PRC], insurance, shareholders' disputes and a variety of commercial cases of considerable complexity and high value. Those proceedings have been conducted under a variety of Rules including UNCITRAL, ICC, HKIAC and CIETAC as well as ad hoc. He has written numerous awards [and has taught award-writing].
He has been a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators since 1992 and a Chartered Arbitrator since 2007. He has served on the ICC Task Force on Revision of the ICC Rules and is a member of the ICC Hong Kong Arbitration and ADR Committee and, formerly, its Nomination sub-committee.
Prior to taking Silk, Nigel was consistently ranked by Chambers and Partners as a "Leading Junior" in Hong Kong. Since taking Silk, he continues to be ranked by Chambers Global and Asia-Pacific for his expertise in commercial dispute resolution. In addition, he advises utilities and the largest corporate clients and appears for them in complex property taxation proceedings in which business- and land valuation are in dispute
