María Gutiérrez has been a member of the Madrid Bar Association (Ilustre Colegio de Abogados de Madrid) since 2000. Before joining Oliva-Ayala Abogados, she worked at one of the leading national law firms (Gómez-Acebo & Pombo Abogados), where she acquired broad experience in the areas of civil and criminal litigation, as well as in alternative dispute resolution (commercial arbitration). In 2010 she became a partner at Oliva-Ayala Abogados and since then she has advised both Spanish and international clients, mostly corporations, in contentious and pre-contentious matters, encompassing all areas of criminal law, particularly, economic and environmental.
Oliva-Ayala Abogados is a law firm specialized exclusively in criminal law that provides its clients with strategic and legal advice in the area of "white collar criminality", including tax fraud, money laundering, corruption offences, fraud, misappropiation, criminal insolvency, insider trading, antitrust offences, forgery, etc.
María Gutiérrez studied law at the University of Seville and received an award for the best academic record in her class (1995). She lived several years in Germany where she attended prestigious seminars at the Universities of Munich, Berlin and Bonn for her PhD (2000). She is currently Professor of criminal law at the Complutense University of Madrid and also lectures in different masters and specialist courses on criminal litigation at Carlos III University, Rey Juan Carlos University and the Business Centre of the San Pablo CEU University, among other significant institutions. She is still involved in investigation activities in public R+D projects and has published several books and articles.

She speaks fluently Spanish, English and German and has also some knowledge of French.
