Kolawole Awodein SAN is the founding partner of Kola Awodein & Co, a leading full service law firm with offices in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt, Nigeria.
Mr Awodein is a consummate advocate specializing in Civil and Commercial Litigation, Constitutional Law and Arbitration. He is widely admired and respected for his thorough understanding of the law and his compelling arguments in the presentation of cases in Court.
He was called to the Nigerian bar in 1978 and conferred with the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) a rank equivalent to Queen's Counsel in England in 1999. He attended the King's College, Lagos, Nigeria, the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) Ile-Ife, Nigeria), and the Harvard Business School: Executive Programme.
He has a sustained and impressive track record of involvement in some of Nigeria's largest and most complex commercial and transactional disputes and litigations and has appeared for various domestic and offshore clients; government, multinationals, corporate entities and individuals in high profile cases both at the trial and appellate courts in Nigeria.
Mr Awodein has been involved as adviser, consultant and lead Counsel to the Central Bank of Nigeria in its recent major reform of the Nigerian Banking sector and the recapitalization of eight Nigerian Banks; He has participated in commercial arbitration in various capacities; and advises national and international clients on a wide range of matters and transactions including: Banking & Finance, Taxation, Intellectual Property, Aviation, Maritime, Telecommunication and Oil & Gas. He has also acted as consultant to the World Bank on the West African Gas Pipeline Project
Mr Awodein is a Notary Public; Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria; Fellow of the Society of Construction Industry Arbitrators; Fellow and Scholar of the Centre for International Legal Studies, Austria; and member of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry Arbitration and Conciliation Tribunal.
Mr Awodein is well-acknowledged for his legal publications and editorials. He has to his credit several publications and has delivered lectures and papers on a wide range of legal issues. His published legal works include: Nigerian Chapter – International Execution against Judgment Debtors; (Sweet & Maxwell [London] 1993) Revised editions 1995, 2006; Nigerian Chapter – International franchising Law (Mathew Bender & Co Inc. 1993) Revised Editions 1997, 2003; 2006. He was also editor/author of the Guardian Newspaper Law Reports in Nigeria, senior deputy editor of the Nigerian Weekly law Reports and he is currently editor-in-chief of the Law Pavilion Electronic Law Reports, Nigeria.
