Susan joined King & Wood Mallesons in 1995. She is a senior partner and the head of the Commercial and Regulatory Group.
Ms Ning is one of the first legal practitioners in China to practice antitrust and competition law, and also one of the pioneers engaged in the cybersecurity and data compliance practice. Under her guidance, KWM became one of the first firms to set up a competition specialist division and data compliance team in China.
Susan is a leading lawyer in the Chinese antitrust and competition field. For six consecutive years (2010-2015), Susan has been listed in Who's Who Legal: Competition. Since 2003, Susan, together with her team, has undertaken many high-profile antitrust merger control filings on behalf of clients, and assisted a number of well-known clients on antitrust investigations. Susan has acted for Qihoo in relation to the landmark antitrust litigation with Tencent where the customer information/data was discussed as market power at the first time in China.
Susan also practices in the areas of cyber security and data compliance, with publications in a number of journals such as the Journal of Cyber Affairs. Her publications include "New Trends of the US Personal Data Protection – Key Points of the New FCC Rules", "Big Data: Success Comes Down to Solid Compliance", "China's Step Forward to Personal Information Protection". Susan's practice areas cover self-assessment of network security, responding to network security check initiated by authorities, data compliance training, due diligence of data transaction or exchange, compliance of cross border data transmission, and etc. Susan has assisted companies in sectors such as IT, transportation, online payment, consumer goods, finance, Internet of Vehicles in dealing with network security and data compliance issues.
Working Experience and Educational Background
Susan and her team have been highly acclaimed for years and recognized and awarded by different reputed legal ranking institutions and well-known legal magazines on many occasions. In 2016 alone, Susan was recognized as one of the Top Female Lawyers in China and selected as a leading lawyer by many professional institutions, such as Chambers, Legal 500 and ALB.
Susan holds a Bachelor of Laws from Peking University and a Master in Law from McGill University. Susan was admitted as a Chinese lawyer in 1988.
