While advising and serving as an advocate and arbitrator in most areas of commercial disputes and international arbitration, Mr Hammond has acquired specific experience in the following subspecialties or areas:
- arbitrator or counsel in numerous ICSID, ICC, UNCITRAL, IACAC and AAA/ICDR arbitrations, including proceedings conducted in English, Spanish and French, and involving a wide variety of disputes in, among others, the energy, insurance, construction, finance, telecommunications, mining, defence, high technology, maritime, and industrial production industries;
- proceedings involving foreign sovereigns or their agencies or instrumentalities, including investment treaty claims and those implicating state commercial activity and alleged acts of expropriation, defence of European, African and Latin American central banks, and enforcement of foreign judgments or arbitral awards against state-owned entities;
- extraterritorial application of antitrust and other US laws, including defence of foreign companies in US and foreign antitrust investigations, class actions alleging offshore price fixing conspiracies, and monopolisation, unfair competition and sensitive payments litigations;
- the liability of parent corporations for the acts of their subsidiaries; director and officer liability; international judicial assistance; and foreign parallel proceedings.
Mr Hammond is an honours graduate of Bowdoin College and Maine Law School, and received his LLM, magna cum laude, in international and comparative law from the Free University of Brussels. He is a President d'Honneur of the Union Internationale des Avocats, and is a Fellow of the College of Commercial Arbitrators.
Mr Hammond's writings appear in such publications as The International Journal of Arbitration,Dispute Resolution International, and Revista de Arbitragem e Mediação. He lectures throughout the world on international arbitration, and is a member of the Advisory Board of Equality Now's Adolescent Girls Legal Defense Fund.
