Mariella Orelli is a partner in Homburger's litigation and arbitration practice team.
She has acted as party counsel in contentious matters before international arbitral tribunals in Switzerland and abroad as well as before state courts, including the Zürich Commercial Court and administrative courts. She has acted as counsel in various landmark cases, such as the first ever successful application for the revision of an arbitral award and the first decision by the Swiss Supreme Court on recognition and enforcement of Mareva injunctions in Switzerland. Mariella has also acted as an arbitrator, both as a chairwoman and as a party-appointed arbitrator. She regularly advises clients on investment arbitration matters.
She is familiar with a number of industries, including financial markets, pharma, energy and construction and a wide range of M&A disputes. Her advisory practice also includes assisting clients in regulatory matters in the energy sector.
Mariella is a member of the Zürich and Swiss Bar Association, IBS, Swiss Arbitration Association, LCIA and other professional associations. She is a co-author of Commentary on Swiss Federal Act on Jurisdiction and Enforcement and of Practitioners' Guide to Arbitration in Switzerland and has published various articles, in particular on topics relating to civil procedure and energy law. She is fluent in Italian, German, English and French.
Between 1993 and 1998, Mariella served as a clerk with the District Court in Zürich and the Commercial Court of the Canton of Zürich . After graduating from the University of Zürich (1992) she was admitted to the Bar (1996) and obtained her LLM from the College of Europe (1999). In 2000, she was a foreign associate at Herbert Smith in London (dispute resolution).
