Gonzalo A Vargas Ateca has been partner of Gonzalez Calvillo S.C., Mexico City based law firm, since 1991 and is member of the firm's Real Estate-Hospitality and Energy Practice Groups. He is a seasoned attorney with over 30 years of experience providing legal and business counsel to Mexican and multinational companies.
Mr Vargas over the years has specialized his practice in the areas of real estate, infrastructure and project development, energy, corporate, M&A, joint ventures and strategic alliances, as well as dispute resolution between shareholders and arbitration (acting expert witness in domestic and international arbitration proceedings). Recognized as a business-oriented practitioner, he is an active member of boards of directors of several joint venture companies.
His work in the real estate field includes structuring of joint ventures and consortiums for carrying out development, infrastructure and investment projects, in a wide array of sectors (i.e., industrial, commercial, tourism and housing). He assists clients, throughout all stages of the projects with his strategic legal input, from the design, property scouting, due diligence analysis, all throughout the business development planning, construction, management and operation.
He has developed critical knowledge and made key contacts through his work with national and multinational developers, financial institutions, general contractors, management companies, architectural firms, sponsors, brokers, service companies and other clients in a broad range of transactions (including cross-border) related to the real estate sector, including their participation in international public and private bids associated with the acquisition of major real estate assets or construction of infrastructure. He also provides advice for the management of distressed assets, being widely recognised in the Mexican legal and business sectors due to his experience in the implementation of sophisticated purchase and sale schemes for golf courses, clubs, hotels and other type of properties.
Additional work experience in project development includes active representation of clients in multi-million dollar transactions and investments in the areas of oil and gas, energy, power generation and petrochemicals. He has advised energy and petroleum companies, including Petróleos Mexicanos (PEMEX), in joint ventures and strategic transactions, as well as in public procurement.
Throughout his career he has been consistently recognized by international publications, namely as real estate specialists by Who's Who Legal as well as in his Energy practice by Chambers & Partners. In addition, given his knowledge and participation in the hospitality and tourism industry, he became member of the International Society of Hospitality Consultants by invitation.
Mr Vargas has been a lecturer in international and domestic forums on subjects related to his legal practice. He graduated with honors from the Universidad Anahuac, is a certified mediator and has undertaken postgraduate studies in tax law and international arbitration.
