Paulo Luiz de Toledo Piza is one of the most distinguished lawyers in Brazil dealing with insurance and reinsurance. Partner of Ernesto Tzirulnik Advocacia (ETAD), Piza has been successfully involved in highly complex litigations in and outside the country, and he is also praised for his legal opinions and for his strategic and unique approach of insurance and reinsurance key market and regulatory issues.
Torts and contractual liability as well as transport of goods are also among the other areas of law to which he is especially dedicated.
Paulo Piza has also been involved in mediations and arbitrations and he has already acted as Brazilian Law expert in depositions.
Graduated in Law in 1990 from the Law School of University of São Paulo (USP), with a Specialization in Commercial Law (1990), Piza holds a Master's Degree in International Law (1996) and a PhD in Law (2002) from the same Law School. Both his LLM dissertation and his PhD thesis were acknowledged the maximum grade plus honors or distinction. He also got a MBA degree in Financial and Actuarial Risk Management from School of Economics and Administration (FEA) at USP (2004)
Paulo Piza is a founding member and current First Vice President of the Brazilian Institute of Insurance Law (IBDS). He took part either as speaker or as member of the organizing board in several national and international conferences, seminars, workshops and courses.
Currently a Professor at the National Insurance School Foundation (FUNENSEG) (2008 to present), he was Assistant Professor of Civil Law and International Private Law at Mackenzie Presbyterian University (2013-2015). He also lectured at the Insurance and Reinsurance Law Program (2002-2011) and at the Commercial Contracts Program (2012-2013) of the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV) in São Paulo, as well as at the Commercial Law Specialization Program of the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (COGEA-PUC-SP) for the Reinsurance Contract course (2004, 2006, 2008 and 2010).
Since he graduated, he published a large number of articles, essays, lectures, and opinions in specialized journals and magazines. He is author of The Application of Sanctions in Contemporary International Law and of the acclaimed book, The Reinsurance Contract: Qualification, Formation and International Law.
Paulo Piza is fluent in English and Spanish, and he has a good knowledge of French and Italian. He can also read and research in German.
