Heather is the Managing Partner of DLA Piper (Canada) LLP's Calgary office. She has over 25 years of experience acting as counsel to clients in complex litigation and disputes on most civil commercial matters. In addition, she has extensive experience with negotiations and mediations in resolving such disputes. In particular, she has acted as counsel on disputes related to energy, oil and gas, products liability, aboriginal and constitutional law, general commercial matters, intellectual property, transportation, aviation, human rights and employment law. Heather frequently appears before both the Trial and Appellate Courts in the province of Alberta, the Federal Court of Canada, and various tribunals, including the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal, energy related tribunals and the Canadian Transportation Agency.
Heather has extensive knowledge of the energy industry, particularly in the oil and gas sector. She has acted on numerous oil and gas disputes, including contract, lease, farm-out and operating agreement issues and royalty calculation disputes. Heather also has specific experience in handling product liability disputes related to the oil and gas sector, including oil and gas production equipment and other types of equipment that generally service this sector.
In addition to the above, Heather has specific expertise in aboriginal law and provides advice on a significant number of issues involving treaty, aboriginal rights and aboriginal title issues; Métis issues; land and reserve issues; Indian Act matters; issues arising under the Indian Oil and Gas Act and regulatory regime; consultation and accommodation issues; impact benefit agreements and resource issues and First Nations governance matters.
