Asue Ighodalo is a founding partner of Banwo & Ighodalo, one of the foremost commercial law firms in Nigeria. He obtained his first degree in Economics from the University of Ibadan, a law degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science; and was admitted into the Nigerian Bar in July 1985.
His core areas of practice are Corporate and Project Finance, Securities and Capital Markets, Energy & Natural Resources, and Mergers & Acquisitions.
Asue is a member of the Nigerian Bar Association (immediate past Chairman of the Section on Business Law of the Nigerian Bar Association), International Bar Association (Section on Energy and Natural Resources Law), Association of International Petroleum Negotiators, Institute of Directors, Nigeria, Nigerian Economic Summit Group (board member), Commercial Law and Taxation Committee of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria.
He has garnered extensive experience in all of his core practice areas. He has been engaged in most of the major corporate mergers and restructurings in Nigeria in the last ten years, and virtually all of the international capital market transactions by both the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Nigerian corporates and commercial banks. Recently, he led the team that advised the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as to Nigerian law), in its recent US$1,500,000,000 Eurobonds issuance in the international capital market. He also led the team that advised the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria in connection with its sale of Keystone Bank Limited. He advised GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Nigeria Plc in connection with its sale of, and divestment from, its drinks related business to Suntory Beverage & Foods Nigeria Limited, a subsidiary of Japanese drinks giant Suntory Beverage & Food. He is currently advising an insurance company in connection with its restructuring (effected by way of a scheme of arrangement) and divestment of 75% equity to an international insurance company.
Asue is the Chairman, Board of Directors, Sterling Bank Plc and Dangote Flour Mills Plc. He also sits on the boards of public and private companies, Non-Governmental Organizations ("NGOs") and a statutory body including Mainstreet Technologies Limited, Cardinal Stone Partners, Okomu Oil Palm Plc, Christopher Kolade Foundation, FATE Foundation and the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA).
Asue has been consistently ranked as a "Tier 1" or "Leading lawyer" in all of his areas of practice by the leading legal directories. He has authored many articles in leading law publications and also delivered several presentations on diverse subjects.
His hobbies include golfing, watching football, reading, traveling and participating in political discourse. He is married and has a daughter.
