Michael Pryles is an expert on international commercial arbitration and international dispute resolution. He is a consultant in the Melbourne office of Clayton Utz and also has chambers in London at 20 Essex Street. Michael has sat as an arbitrator in some 100 cases throughout Asia, Europe, North America and Australia. These cases have involved ad hoc and institutional arbitrations under the following rules: UNCITRAL, ICSID, ICC, LCIA, SIAC, HKIAC, CIETAC and Swiss. Michael has sat as chairman, sole arbitrator and party-appointed arbitrator. The cases involved a variety of disputes, including technology transfer, investment and joint ventures, energy, building and construction, and general commercial matters with amounts claimed up to US$1.5 billion.

Michael holds three doctorates in law, is a chartered arbitrator and is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK), the Institute of Arbitrators and Mediators Australia, the Arbitrators and Mediators Institute of New Zealand and the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators.

He holds the following positions: court member LCIA, president Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration, president Asia Pacific Regional Arbitration Group, and chairman ICC Australia. Formerly he was a commercial law partner in one of Australia's largest law firms, held the Henry Bournes Higgins Chair of Law at Monash University in Australia, was a commissioner of the United National Compensation Commission, Geneva, and was a commissioner of the Australian Law Reform Commission.

Michael is a member of most panels of arbitrators, including ICSID, where he is one of the three arbitrators nominated by the Australian government. He has published extensively and is the author of some 10 books and over 150 articles on international arbitration, international dispute resolution, private international law and international trade law.
